Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera assemblages in two Atlantic Rainforest streams, Southeastern Brazil

Abstract: Assemblages of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (EPT) of rocky substrates were studied in two streams of the Intervales State Park. Monthly collections with a Surber sampler (10 random sampling units, 1m²) were carried out from September 1999 to September 2000 and quarterly from December 2000 to September 2001 in the Bocaina and Água Comprida Streams. The EPT fauna in the Bocaina Stream was more diversified and more abundant than in the Água Comprida Stream. The EPT fauna was quite different in the tw… Show more

“…Another study (Couceiro et al, 2007) showed that Marilia was an indicator of non-impacted streams. The results also reinforce other evidence that species of Nectopsyche and Phylloicus are inhabitants of sites of high environmental heterogeneity (Crisci-Bispo et al, 2007). Specifically, Nectopsyche species occurs mainly in riffle areas (CrisciBispo et al, 2004) and Phylloicus species occurs in leaf litter in slow flowing sites, building shelter with pieces of these leaves (Pather, 2003).…”

“…The high richness of Ephemeroptera found in this study is highlighted by comparison with other studies of different environments and regions of Brazil, based only on sampling nymphs (e.g., Crisci-Bispo et al 2007;Bispo & Oliveira 2007;Siegloch et al 2008;Righi-Cavallaro et al 2010). These re-Revista Brasileira de Entomologia 56(4): 473-480, dezembro, 2012 sults emphasize that the mountainous regions of São Paulo State harbor a high diversity of aquatic insects, as demonstrated also in studies of Trichoptera (Spies & Froehlich 2009) and Coleoptera (Segura et al 2012).…”

“…In São Paulo, the number of studies on ecology, taxonomy, and biology of Ephemeroptera assemblages are increasing in recent years (e.g., Crisci-Bispo et al 2007;Polegatto & Froehlich 2003;Mariano & Polegatto 2011) and led to the current knowledge of biodiversity in the state. On the other hand, due to the increasing human occupation and exploitation of natural areas, faunal inventories especially those that include both immature and alates are relevant to the establishment of priority areas for biodiversity conservation.…”
