Enzymatic characterization of Vibrio alginolyticus strains isolated from bivalves harvested at Venice Lagoon (Italy) and Guanabara Bay (Brazil)

Abstract: SUMMARYThe aquatic ecosystem is the natural habitat of microorganisms including Vibrio and Aeromonas genus which are pathogenic to human and animals. In the present investigation the frequency of these bacteria and the enzymatic characteristics of 34 Vibrio alginolyticus strains isolated from bivalves harvested in Venice Lagoon (Italy) and Guanabara Bay (Brazil) were carried out from November 2003 to February 2004. The mussels' samples were submitted to enrichment in Alkaline Peptone Water (APW) added with 1% … Show more

“…The mode of infection and transmission of this species remains to be studied, although it is probably seawater. The presence of V. alginolyticus may lead to wound infections, enteric diseases and sepsis in humans exposed to seawater (Lafisca et al, 2008;Masini et al, 2007). Moreover, V. alginolyticus is known to cause gastroenteritis (Darbas et al, 1992;Reina et al, 1995;Sabir et al, 2012;Traoré et al, 2012) in humans.…”

“…The Venice lagoon is an area of great economic importance for mollusk commerce. Little information is available concerning the distribution of Vibrionaceae in this area, and most of the studies are related to marine samples (e.g., sediments, plankton, or water) (52,53,54). In this work, we developed and applied an MLSA scheme based on four housekeeping genes, together with different statistical and predictive models, to characterize the Vibrio species from the Venice lagoon and to explore to what extent different ecologies represented distinct habitats for this genus.…”

“…The clinical cases associated with V. alginolyticus are very rare and if any, the virulence factors triggering the illnesses are not clearly established for this species yet (Tantillo et al 2004;Schets et al 2006;Campanelli et al 2008). Vibrio alginolyticus is part of the natural microflora of marine organisms but it could constitute a threat as this species has been reported in diseased corals, fishes, crustaceans and bivalves molluscs (Balebona et al 1998;Kumar et al 2007;Wang et al 2007;Yan et al 2007;Cervino et al 2008;Harriague et al 2008;Lafisca et al 2008;Austin 2010). Moreover, it has been also associated with mortalities in aquaculture (Darbas et al 1992;Snoussi et al 2008).…”
