Environmental variability and heavy metal concentrations from five lagoons in the Ionian Sea (Amvrakikos Gulf, W Greece)

Abstract: BackgroundCoastal lagoons are ecosystems of major importance as they host a number of species tolerant to disturbances and they are highly productive. Therefore, these ecosystems should be protected to ensure stability and resilience. The lagoons of Amvrakikos Gulf form one of the most important lagoonal complexes in Greece. The optimal ecological status of these lagoons is crucial for the well-being of the biodiversity and the economic prosperity of the local communities. Thus, monitoring of the area is neces… Show more

“…High Zn concentrations were also found by Strogyloudi et al (2014) in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus used as a bioindicator species in Amvrakikos Gulf. Karageorgis (2007) and Vasileiadou et al (2016) highlighted that the metal enrichment in the gulf results from natural processes rather than anthropogenic stressors, which seems consistent with the results of the present study.…”

“…Characterized by a complex system of lagoons, extensive delta formations, salt meadows, marshlands, and swamps, it is a shallow semi-enclosed gulf connected with the Ionian Sea through a narrow channel. It is protected by the Ramsar, Barcelona, Berne, and Bonne Conventions and has been declared a national park (2008) (Tsangaris et al, 2010;Vasileiadou et al, 2016). The rivers Vovos, Krikeliotis, Arachthos, and Louros drain into the gulf, with the two latter discharging contaminants carried from agricultural land (Tsangaris et al, 2010;Karaouzas et al, 2021;Tzempelikou et al, 2021).…”

“…Coastal lagoons are critically valuable habitats. They are home to a variety of endangered species and are extremely competitive [37] . They serve as breeding grounds for marine fish and invertebrates, and as a resting place for many migratory bird species.…”

“…As for their characteristics, the coastal lagoons are mostly shallow, with maximum depths of up to ten meters, except those where the connection with the sea is open and are used for navigation, so they have up to 58 m as the deepest value [26] in the case of the Gulf of Amvrakikos (number 27). The maximum extension is presented in the Razim-Sinoie lagoon (number 25), located in the Danube delta [16], with an area of 1292 km 2 .…”
