This study aims to demonstrate the validity of the Pollution Haven Hypothesis (PHH) for BRICS nations by revealing the empirical relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI), air pollution, and environmental regulations. At the same time, the study objectives are based on the BRICS′ COP26 goals focused on mobilizing climate finance annually. The SDGs agenda for 2030 seeks to implement effective climate change planning and management. However, the study uses the panel data of BRICS countries from 2000 to 2020. This study has used the PMG/PARDL model to empirically test the existence of PHH in BRICS countries. Therefore, the empirical estimates indicate that an increase in FDI increases environmental degradation. Consequently, the findings confirm the existence of PHH in BRICS. This study demonstrates that at low levels of stringency, the likelihood of pollution-intensive FDIs increases with a decrease in severity. Even though strict regulations may lead to higher pollution-intensive foreign direct investment (FDI), this is not always the case at lower levels of law. This implies that the same pollution activity may be economically and socially unsuitable for developed environments but desirable for less advanced environments. These distinctions are the foundation for the emergence of pollution havens. Therefore, environmental policy laxity must be formed to induce FDI flow into the BRICS countries, further implying SDG’s accomplishment. Furthermore, additional stringent regulations might very well result in FDIs with a more significant environmental impact. This suggests that pollution havens are only possible if environmental rules are lax or inconsequential.

This study aimed to investigate the environmental impact of modified granulated copper slag (MGCS) utilization in blended cement production at a representative cement plant in China. Sensitivity analysis was performed on the substance inputs, and the life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) model was applied. A detailed comparative analysis was conducted of the environmental impact of cement production in other studies, and ordinary Portland cement production at the same cement plant. Results showed that calcination has the largest contribution impact of all the impact categories, especially in causing global warming (93.67%), which was the most prominent impact category. The life cycle assessment (LCA) result of blended cement was sensitive to the chosen LCIA model and the depletion of limestone and energy. In this study, producing blended cement with MGCS effectively mitigated the environmental impact for all the selected impact categories. Results also show a reduction in abiotic depletion (46.50%) and a slight growth (6.52%) in human toxicity. The adoption of MGCS in blended cement would therefore generally decrease the comprehensive environmental impact of cement, which contributes to the development of sustainable building materials.

This work reported a process for the preparation of Portland cement clinker from sulfuric acid leaching residue of coal fly ash. Aluminum and iron in fly ash were effectively leached by sulfuric acid leaching, and the silica was all concentrated in the acid leaching residue. The chemical analysis showed that the content of SiO2 in the leaching residue was 79.1% and the leaching residue contained a small amount of Al2O3, CaO and Fe2O3, which could replace clay as the raw material for the preparation of Portland cement clinker. The effects of main process conditions on the quality of prepared cement clinker were studied. The results showed that the burnability of the raw material with clinker rate value KH=0.92, SM=2.1, IM=1.2 and leaching residue content of 26.98% was excellent and good. The mineralogical analysis and microscopic examination showed that the good quality clinker was obtained under the conditions of sintering temperature of 1450℃ and holding time of 60 min, and the tricalcium silicate phase was well developed. Based on this study, acid leaching residue of coal fly ash was viable as an effective, alternative raw material in Portland cement production.
