There is an increasing interest in investigating the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis because it suggests the existence of a turning point in the economy that will lead to a sustainable development path. Although many studies have focused on the EKC, only a few empirical studies have focused on analyzing the EKC with specific reference to Indonesia, and none of them have examined the potential of renewable energy sources within the EKC framework. This study attempts to estimate the EKC in the case of Indonesia for the period of 1971-2010 by considering the role of renewable energy in electricity production, using the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach to cointegration as the estimation method. We found an inverted U-shaped EKC relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions in the long run. The estimated turning point was found to be 7,729 USD per capita, which lies outside of our sample period. The beneficial impacts of renewable energy on CO2 emission reduction are observable both in the short run and in the long run. Our work has important implications both for policymakers and for the future development of renewable energy in Indonesia.

All over the world, deterioration of environmental quality has been considered as a hot issue. The growing number of industries is one of the major reasons for the enhanced level of pollution and fast degradation of environmental resources. This situation urges the corporates to involve themselves in socially responsible activities and to periodically assess the ecofriendly technologies. This paper proposes to investigate the Environmental Kuznets Curve Hypothesis, with reference to sample companies listed in BSE S&P -500, over the period 1 st April 2005 to 31 st March 2014. In order to determine the existence of EKC relationship, the sign and magnitude of regression coefficients were analyzed. The results exhibited U shaped relationship for ROE, ROCE, and ROS. At the same time, EKC relationship, by way of inverted U shaped curve, was found for ROA. Based on the empirical findings of this study, some suggestions have been put forward to the corporates and policy makers, to control the level of energy intensity, by implementing eco-friendly technologies.

In 2015, the UN adopted a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to eradicate poverty, establish socioeconomic inclusion and protect the environment. Critical voices such as the International Council for Science (ICSU), however, have expressed concerns about the potential incompatibility of the SDGs, specifically the incompatibility of socio-economic development and environmental sustainability. In this paper, we test, quantify and model the alleged inconsistency of SDGs. Our analyses show which SDGs are consistent and which are conflicting. We measure the extent of inconsistency and conclude that the SDG agenda will fail as a whole if we continue with business as usual. We further explore the nature of the inconsistencies using dynamical systems models, which reveal that the focus on economic growth and consumption as a means for development underlies the inconsistency. Our models also show that there are factors which can contribute to development (health programmes, government investment) on the one hand and ecological sustainability (renewable energy) on the other, without triggering the conflict between incompatible SDGs.
