Objective Surgeon tremor was measured during vitreoretinal microscopic surgeries under different hand support conditions. Background While the ophthalmic surgeon’s forearm is supported using a standard symmetric wrist rest when operating on the patient’s same side as the dominant hand (SSD), the surgeon’s hand is placed directly on the patient’s forehead when operating on the contralateral side of the dominant hand (CSD). It was hypothesized that more tremor is associated with CSD surgeries than SSD surgeries and that, using an experimental asymmetric wrist rest where the contralateral wrist bar gradually rises and curves toward the patient’s operative eye, there is no difference in tremor associated with CSD and SSD surgeries. Methods Seventy-six microscope videos, recorded from three surgeons performing macular membrane peeling operations, were analyzed using marker-less motion tracking, and movement data (instrument path length and acceleration) were recorded. Tremor acceleration frequency and magnitude were measured using spectral analysis. Following 47 surgeries using a conventional symmetric wrist support, surgeons incorporated the experimental asymmetric wrist rest into their surgical routine. Results There was 0.11 mm/s2 (22%) greater ( p = .05) average tremor acceleration magnitude for CSD surgeries (0.62 mm/s2, SD = 0.08) than SSD surgeries (0.51 mm/s2, SD = 0.09) for the symmetric wrist rest, while no significant ( p > .05) differences were observed (0.57 mm, SD = 0.13 for SSD and 0.58 mm, SD = 0.11 for CSD surgeries) for the experimental asymmetric wrist rest. Conclusion The asymmetric wrist support reduced the difference in tremor acceleration between CSD and SSD surgeries.

Introduction: Graduate sonographers possess the necessary knowledge and practical skills for employment, but personal characteristics and behavioural skills can also affect employability prospects. There is a lack of research regarding important characteristic traits of graduate sonographers. This research aims to determine what personal, interpersonal, and professional attributes clinical supervisors think are important and compare these answers to final year student sonographers.Methods: An online questionnaire was designed and provided to clinical supervisors and final year sonography students from a single institution. Their anonymous responses were recorded, analysed, and compared.Results: Reponses were obtained from 65 clinical supervisors and 39 final year students. There was a statistically significant difference in 10 of the 18 attributes, and these mainly trended from the personal characteristics and organisational acumen categories. Student results rated 'works as a team', 'technical knowledge', and 'communication with a range of people' to be of the highest importance whilst clinical supervisors felt 'communication with a range of people', 'seeks support', 'technical knowledge', and 'clinical reasoning' were vital for new graduates. Both groups agreed 'communication with a range of people' and 'seeks support' were important skills. Conclusion:This research demonstrates both supervisors' and graduates' views of necessary work-related traits for new sonography graduates. Overall, both groups had similar views regarding social intelligence and work competence attributes but diverged when it came to personal and organisational acumen categories. Education could be incorporated into the sonography student curriculum to ensure future students are aware of characteristics that might enhance their job prospects and career performance.

Neurosurgery is one of the most competitive specialties in the UK. In 2019, securing an ST1 post in neurosurgery corresponds to competition ration of 6.54 whereas a CST1 post 2.93. Further, at ST3 level, neurosurgery is the most competitive. In addition, the number of neurosurgical training posts are likely to be reduced in the coming years. A number of very specific shortlisting criteria, aiming to filter and select the best candidates for interview exist. In the context of the high competition ratios and the specific shortlisting criteria, developing an interest in the neurosciences early on will allow individuals more time to meet the necessary standards for neurosurgery. Here, we aim to outline the shortlisting criteria and offer advice on how to achieve maximum scores, increasing the likelihood to be shortlisted for an interview.
