“…In some wastewater treatment plants, nitrification occurs in a non‐detectable DO environment (Applegate et al, 1980; Daigger & Littleton, 2000). Besides, some studies realized PN with DO value at 0.2–0.5 mg L −1 (Deng et al, 2021; Gilbert et al, 2015; Jiang et al, 2019; Zhang, Peng, et al, 2021) and even at 0.1 mg L −1 (Landreau et al, 2020) in a lab scale reactor with synthetic wastewater. It is possible that specific AOB would convert NH4+$$ {NH}_4^{+} $$ to NO2$$ {NO}_2^{-} $$ with low DO.…”

“…It took more than 200 days to obtain a relative abundance of Nitrosomonas up to 0.95% and 5.2%, respectively, when treating domestic wastewater and landfill leachate with reduced dissolved oxygen (DO < 1.5 mg·L −1 ). (Deng et al, 2021; Zhang et al, 2022). In conclusion, AOB and AnAOB coexist in a low‐oxygen reactor and would endure the presence of COD as a novel sewage treatment method.…”

“…Over the past few years, anammox under anoxic conditions has shown great promise. Specifically, denitrifying bacteria contribute NO 2 – through partial-denitrification (PD, NO 3 – to NO 2 – ), which is then utilized by anammox bacteria. This anoxic integration has demonstrated high stability in removing NH 4 + and NO 3 – from synthetic sewage and municipal wastewater. For instance, in an anoxic sequencing batch reactor (SBR), the nitrogen removal rate and efficiency reached 1.28 kg-N/(m 3 ·d) and 94.1%, respectively . These successes of anammox under anoxic conditions shed fresh light on upgrading the carbon-restricted anoxic zone.…”
