Recently developed mobile broadband wireless systems can provide high-quality multimedia services with required levels of QoS. Currently most 4 ℎ generation wireless communication systems employ the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) technology in the downlink (DL) part of their physical layer. In this paper we present a simulation-based performance analysis of the Priority-Aware Extended eOCSA (PA-EeOCSA) DL frame packing algorithm under mixed VoIP and uncorrelated data traffic. For VoIP traffic, the ON-SID model has been used and the packing efficiency of both the eOCSA and PA-EeOCSA algorithms have been compared. Simulation results point out that in terms of mean percentage of unallocated bursts and the number of slots allocated on average, the PA-EeOCSA algorithm performs more efficiently in comparison to eOCSA.Results also show that with data users fixed at 20, between 40-45 VoIP users can be admitted if the mean percentage of unallocated bursts is to be maintained below 3.0 %. Recall that, a low mean percentage of unallocated bursts is imperative in order to keep the overall packet loss rate below a tolerable limit. Improving the transcoding capability of speech coders

With the trend of merging various communication networks, a need arises to provide transcoding between different speech coding formats. Presently this means cross tandeming the two coders in each case. This results in both quality loss and extra delay. A possible alternative is using a bitstream mapping approach that directly converts parameter values. For several standard coders having a similar coding structure, it should be possible to generate comparable or better quality without adding much delay or complexity. This paper proposes a bitstream mapping method between ITU-T Recommendation G.729 and TIA IS-641. Informal listening tests and the perceptual subjective quality measure (PSQM) scores show that the proposed method has better quality than the cross tandeming method, while it has at least 5 ms less delay and six times less computation.

This paper gives an overview of recent bibliographic references dealing with speech processing in mobile terminals. Its purpose is to point out state of the art issues in the area; thus a fairly large list of references taken from many conferences proceedings and journals is given and commented. General considerations about speech processing in mobile communications are "rstly introduced; then we deal with audio processing for speech enhancement in mobile terminals and with low bit-rate speech coding. Speech recognition is addressed with some accent put on mobile applications. A short overview of implementation aspects of speech processing algorithms in mobile terminals is also given.
