Engineering and Philosophy of Engineering

Abstract: Philosophy of engineering lays the philosophical foundation of recognition, understanding and management of engineering. Being the kernel of philosophy of engineering, engineering ontology becomes the master key to understanding of engineering. The paper proposes and interprets the principal theses of engineering ontology, which differs from understanding of engineering in separate elements. Engineering ontology believes that engineering is the direct, realistic productivity that runs dynamically and feasibly … Show more

“…These factors interrelate with and rely on each other while at the same time constraining and conflicting with each other. The philosophy of engineering is thus required to analyze, coordinate and integrate various factors for better coordination, so as to closely follow the objective rules and achieve harmony between ecology and the society (Yin & Wang, 2007). In any study of systems sciences, the law of contradiction always serves as the logical starting point (Liu, 1992).…”

“…Yin et al said that engineering system is an organic entity formed by people, materials, facilities, energy, information, technology, capital, land, management and other elements based on specific targets and technical requirements in order to achieve functions like the fundamental innovation and construction (Yin, Wang, & Li, 2007). It is extensively and deeply affected by environmental factors such as nature, the economy and society.…”

“…There is a need for a series of engineering methodologies to help solve these complicated problems comprehensively. The resulting methods can be applied to manage the innovation requirement analysis, and to optimize the research, analysis, design and implementation of the project (Zhang, 2002;Xu, 2004;Wang, 2015;Yin et al, 2007;Fu, 2007).…”
