“…While some FAO member countries collect sex-disaggregated fisheries data, many countries lack the capacity to collect these data or resist doing so. Substantial efforts have been made by the FAO to collate sex-disaggregated employment statistics for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors from the member countries who collect and provide them [20]. These efforts are summarized in the 2018 State of World Fisheries and Agriculture report [47].…”

“…Many qualitative accounts of cultures and contexts around the world describe the participation by women in the collection of marine biomass (i.e., seaweed, fish, and invertebrates), but these activities are often not reflected in fisheries' statistics and census data or even considered fishing at all. The FAO has made substantial efforts in recent years to improve the state of sexdisaggregated employment statistics for the fisheries and aquaculture sectors, but these efforts are constrained by the voluntary reporting of national data [20]. Currently there is no standardized global dataset containing sex-disaggregated fisheries data that can be used to highlight the contributions by women in fisheries and assess the gendered impacts of policies or changes to fisheries.…”

“…There is a need to ensure that the response to COVID-19 by the state does not reproduce or perpetuate gender inequalities, by ensuring that women's engagement in both the commercial and small-scale sector is acknowledged, identified, and supported through government assistance. We need evidence to prove that women and girls are disproportionately vulnerable to this crisis so that COVID-19 response strategies can effectively reach and benefit women and girls (UN Women, 2020). There is an urgent need also to fill the existing data gaps, especially due to the lack of sex-disaggregated, intersectional data in fisheries and aquaculture (see Gee and Bacher, 2017;UN, 2020).This is to ensure that the subsidies and aid, regulatory enforcement relaxations, and support given to fisheries and aquaculture enterprises take into consideration the needs of different social and gender groups within the sector and recognize the invisible roles of women.Additionally, the use of a gender lens and specific targeting of women through these interventions will ensure that the benefits reach different groups of women and men who are dependent on the sector (UN, 2020). With persisting gender gaps in access to inputs like information and extension services, governments need to take extra precautions to ensure the COVID-19 response is gender-responsive.…”

“…Pesticides may also influence biodiversity by eliminating weeds and insects, resulting in negative consequences farther up the food chain. Acute pesticide poisoning is a leading cause of illness and mortality in humans worldwide, particularly in developing nations, where poor farmers frequently use highly toxic pesticide formulations [7]. The flood plain of the River Lamurde and River Mayo-Gwoi in Jalingo Local government area, Taraba state, Nigeria is intensively cultivated through irrigation and rain-fed agriculture.…”
