Energy Prices Impact on Inflationary Spiral

Abstract: Energy constitutes an essential share of costs across any economy. The percentage of electricity in the overall energy consumption is steadily increasing. This increase, however, is not reflected correctly in the consumption basket relevant for measuring inflation and, therefore, for monetary policy formulation. We argue that the energy mix reflected in inflation should be revised in favour of electricity. We present an analysis of inflationary pressures across Europe and decompose the impact of energy categor… Show more

“…The literature on the relationship between inflation and access to and utilisation of energy is very scanty. Close to this relationship is that of energy price and access to or consumption of energy explored by few studies (Kilian, 2008;Talha et al, 2021;Bedn a r et al, 2022). However, the price of energy is only one of many prices faced by households and firms (Kilian, 2008) hence inflation, which deprives citizens of their real income, needs to be considered because this deprivation could push individuals into the consumption of energy from non-modern sources.…”

“…On the other hand, the Czech Republic is one of the largest exporters of electricity in the world (Dvořák et al, 2018). The energy crisis that has gripped the European continent is unprecedented in recent decades (Bednář et al, 2022). In the meantime, the war in Ukraine has set security alarms for the EU but has also amplified the problems with gas supply.…”
