“…Teberg et al 24 and Gray and coworkers 28 concluded that VLBW and preterm infants with BPD present a higher risk of neurodevelopmental delay but that this risk is associated with neonatal brain lesions and not respiratory problems. In the present study, infants with BPD at 36 weeks had more developmental delays, and this difference was maintained when we excluded infants with IVH grade 4, PVL, or both, as were findings by Meisel et al 29 Davidson and colleagues 30 found no significant neurodevelopmental difference between infants with or without BPD but described a strong association between duration of assisted ventilation and handicap. In our study, infants in the BPD-2 group were ventilated for a longer time compared with the other groups, and there was a strong association between ventilation and outcome.…”
