Abstract: Thoracic computed tomography (CT) is an essential component in the preoperative staging of bronchial carcinomas as is mediastinoscopy (MSC) in cases of mediastinal lymphoma. It is known that endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), as a new diagnostic procedure, can predict lymph-node involvement in cases of tumors in the upper gastrointestinal tract with an 80% probability. In a prospective study, we examined whether EUS could be used to ascertain the presence of mediastinal lymph nodes in cases of bronchial carcino… Show more

“…Also, endoscopic ultrasound can be useful to evaluate the depth of tumour invasion into the bronchial wall and the adjacent structures (Schuder et al, 1991;Hurther et al, 1992). In the near future these examinations will become essential for endoscopic diagnosis of central-type lung cancer.…”

“…The use of ultrasound imaging to visualize the lung and mediastinum by a transcutaneous or transesophageal approach has been proposed as a potential adjunct to methods such as fluoroscopy and CT scanning. [8][9][10][11][12] These techniques are of limited value, however, due to anatomic constraints and the inability to image across the air interface of the lung. Recent studies have shown that endobronchial ultrasound via the FFB using miniature ultrasound probes is feasible and of practical value in the guidance of bronchoscopic biopsies.…”

“…Endo-oesophageal ultrasound with fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) is a relatively new method, first described in 1991 [80]. Since then, several studies have been published and it has been demonstrated that generally all lesions outlined by EUS may be punctured, and even small lesions down to the size of 5 mm may be diagnosed [81].…”
