Abstract: Aim. We sought to evaluate our experience with endoscopic radial artery harvesting for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). Methods. From October 2005 to June 2010, 50 patients who underwent endoscopic radial artery harvesting for an elective CABG were prospectively assessed for harvesting characteristics, complications, postoperative and mid-term outcomes.Results. There were 34 (68%) males and 16 (32%) females, average age 60.8±9.2 years. All but two RA grafts (96%) were successfully harvested endoscopical… Show more

“…Second, our data showed that ERAH took longer to perform than ORAH (50.9 min vs 41.2 min). This is in line with previous studies and must be taken into account when planning operations on high‐risk patients. Third, endoscopic harvesting is a more complex procedure and the subsequent learning curve is steeper.…”

“…Average RA harvest time was 66 minutes with a range of 25‐120 minutes . Another report by Simek and coauthors confirmed a significant learning curve . A significant drop in overall harvesting time (56.2 ± 18.6 vs. 38.6 ± 8.6 min, p < 0.001) and forearm ischemia time (41.8 ± 12.7 vs 24.2 ± 3.2 min, p < 0.001) was found over this period and the authors concluded that around 10 cases are needed to become proficient with the technique.…”

“…Arm swelling was rarely present in 2 pts (2.1%), which was even less than after the endoscopic technique, where it was reported to be present in 12% of pts [20].…”

“…Thus, ERAH is currently limited to centers with an "expert harvester" available. 21,22 Finally, the authors do not report using any of the commonly accepted and validated scoring criterion for objectively quantifying arm dysfunction, nor do they describe employing objective measures of grip strength. In fact, the authors do not define how they differentiated between major and minor neuralgias.…”
