Recent technology developments and the numerous availabilities of mobile users, devices and Internet technologies together with the growing focus on reducing traffic congestion and emissions in urban areas have led to the emergence of new paradigms for ridesharing and crowdsourcing for smart cities. Compared to carpooling approaches where the driver and participant passengers or riders are usually prearranged and the journey details known beforehand, the paradigm for ridesharing requires the participants to be selected at short notice and the rider trips are often dynamically formed. Crowdsourcing techniques and approaches are well suited to match drivers and riders for these dynamic scenarios, although there are many challenges to be addressed. This paper aims to survey this new paradigm of ridesharing and crowdsourcing for smart city transportation environments from several technological and social perspectives including: (1) Ridesharing and architecture in transportation; (2) Techniques for ridesharing; (3) Artificial intelligence for ridesharing; (4) Autonomous vehicles and systems ridesharing; and (5) Security, policy and pricing strategies. The paper concludes with some use cases and lessons learned for the practical deployment of ridesharing and crowdsourcing platforms for smart cities.

Developing a Framework for Spatial Effects of Smart Cities Based on Spatial Econometrics

The rapid urbanization in China has already put heavy pressures on imperfect infrastructure, especially for fundamental urban functions such as power and water supply, traffic, education, and healthcare. The emergence of smart cities can help cope with the rapidly expanding demands on urban infrastructure. However, the development of smart cities in China is just in its infancy, and there is still a lack of clear understanding of the development path of smart cities. This article focuses on the development of smart cities in China. It aims to (a) judge whether there is spatial autoregression in the construction of smart cities in 83 Chinese cities and (b) identify key influencing factors in the development of smart cities in China through a spatial econometric model developed by GeoDa software. The results show that there exists spatial autoregression in the development of smart cities in China. Four key influencing factors (governmental support, innovative level, economic development, and human capital) are identified. Based on these findings, suggestions for future promoting development of smart cities in China are put forward. This research can deepen the understanding of the spatial effects of smart cities and provide valuable decision-making references for policy makers.

Globalization and civilization development are progressing in the world, according to statistics people have been migrating from rural areas to cities for many years. At the moment, this phenomenon is noticeable in every place and country, regardless of the state of affluence, level of development or other factors. Some developed countries such as Japan have urbanization at 97.6%. Along with the development of cities, problems also arise. One of the largest is the management of large municipal units. It should be noted that in addition to ordinary areas such as public transport and clean air, there are also extremely important as urban community management. Smart City concepts are created to coordinate activities in urban areas, but also outline development directions for the future. The author focuses on the analysis of information processes in Smart City and proper knowledge management thanks to electronic tools such as Resident Portal. Only fully coordinated and properly managed communication between residents, stakeholders and municipal authorities is able to strengthen and develop cities.
