Emissions from Swine Manure Treated with Current Products for Mitigation of Odors and Reduction of NH3, H2S, VOC, and GHG Emissions

Abstract: Odor and gaseous emissions from the swine industry are of concern for the wellbeing of humans and livestock. Additives applied to the swine manure surface are popular, marketed products to solve this problem and relatively inexpensive and easy for farmers to use. There is no scientific data evaluating the effectiveness of many of these products. We evaluated 12 manure additive products that are currently being marketed on their effectiveness in mitigating odor and gaseous emissions from swine manure. We used a… Show more

“…The "Experiments" section is largely reduced to the essentials to avoid redundant information that was described in detail in the "Methods" section of the recently published paper (Chen et al, 2020b). The Chen et al (2020b) paper is focused on methods and raw data presentation in an organized fashion for transparency and reuse. This paper focuses on data analysis, results, discussion, and conclusions.…”

“…A detailed description of the experimental design, key components of manure storage simulators, properties of manure, airflow control, gas (NH 3 , H 2 S, CO 2 , CH 4 , N 2 O), 11 odorous VOCs and odor concentration measurements are presented elsewhere (Chen et al, 2020b).…”

“…Clearly, the need is still there as the performance data for marketed products is nearly non-existent [4,5]. In a recent publication, Chen et al (2020a) reported on a comprehensive study to evaluate gas emissions data from swine manure treated with different commercial additive products [58].…”
