Emerging research topics in agricultural meteorology and assessment of climate change adaptation

Abstract: Climate change is virtually certain and efforts for adaptation is essential not only to decrease the negative consequences but also to increase the opportunities. To achieve the goal, we need to address emerging research topics in the field of agricultural meteorology with regard to climate change adaptation. We touch upon how harvesting insights from crop models with different complexities can be improved, the detection and attribution of impacts on agricultural ecosystems associated with climate and technolo… Show more

“…The crop yield simulation demonstrated significant decreases at lower latitudes as well as significant yield increases at higher latitudes. Furthermore, Iizumi et al (2018b) summarized agricultural research topics for climate change adaptation. Kim et al (2018) conducted a survey of climate change impact on heating and cooling system for air conditioning by targeting Yokohama Minatomirai 21 Area, Japan.…”

“…One is Hirota et al (2012) which reports the main outcomes of climate change research in Hokkaido, north Japan, presented in the conference held on September 9, 2011. The other is Iizumi et al (2018) presenting their opinions on ways moving forward in adaptation research in agricultural meteorology based on the discussion made on March 27, 2017. Some authors of these reports or participants in the discussions committedly contributed to this book as authors.…”

“…Farmers are introducing more hot-season crops such as nagaimo (Dioscorea polystachya) and green soy beans to compensate for the economic damage [15]. Moreover, wine production in Japan has shifted to cooler region, where the air temperature is suitable for the cultivation of authentic European wine grapes, promoting wider vineyards in Hokkaido [39,40]. Therefore, a part of the steep-sloped hillsides is used as vineyards instead of being protected by forest cover.…”
