Emerging and Novel Viruses in Passerine Birds

Richard A. J. Williams,
Christian J. Sánchez-Llatas,
Ana Doménech
et al.

Abstract: There is growing interest in emerging viruses that can cause serious or lethal disease in humans and animals. The proliferation of cloacal virome studies, mainly focused on poultry and other domestic birds, reveals a wide variety of viruses, although their pathogenic significance is currently uncertain. Analysis of viruses detected in wild birds is complex and often biased towards waterfowl because of the obvious interest in avian influenza or other zoonotic viruses. Less is known about the viruses present in … Show more

“…Metagenomic analysis has emerged as a powerful tool for identifying and characterizing viral communities in various samples [ 6 , 7 ]. This approach enables the detection of a wide range of viruses, including those challenging to culture using traditional methods, by sequencing genetic material from complex microbial communities.…”

“…WNV has been found to infect over 392 distinct bird species [ 15 ]. The first, indirect, evidence of WNV transmission in wild birds in Spain, in 2003, was provided by a serosurvey of Common Coot ( Fulica atra ), a partially migratory aquatic bird, in Doñana National Park (Huelva, Southern Spain) [ 11 ].…”
