Elucidation of Electrode Reaction of EuCl3in LiCl-KCl Eutectic Melts through CV Curve Analysis

Abstract: The electrode reaction of Eu 3+ in a LiCl-KCl eutectic melt has been re-examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV). In this work, for the first time, the kinetic details of a Eu 3+ /Eu 2+ redox system have been completely elucidated, along with the thermodynamic property, through a curve fitting applied to experimental CV data, which were obtained in a wide scan rate range of 0.5 to 10 V/s. The simulated results showed an excellent fit to all experimental CV data simultaneously, even though the curve fittings were… Show more

“…Measured formal potential was comparable with those in literatures by taking different concentrations of AgCl in the reference electrode into account. 4,22,23 The absorption spectra were measured in combination with excess oxidative electrolysis at constant potential of 0.950 V vs. Ag/Ag + to get the pure absorption spectrum of Eu(III) irrespective of adding EuCl 3 into the LiCl-KCl chloride eutectic. The electrolysis proceeded until the spectra were not transiently changed any more.…”

“…The diffusion coefficients of EuCl3 in molten LiCl-KCl salt are studied by CV, CP and other methods [31,36,37]. The diffusion coefficient of Eu 2+ is also studied and summarized in Table A…”

“…The electrowinning process developed at KAERI consists of three steps ( Figure 12): (i) LCC electrowinning for simultaneous recovery of U and TRU using an LCC, (ii) residual actinide recovery (RAR) process for recovery of the residual low-concentration U/TRU in the salt after the LCC electrowinning process, and (iii) Cd distillation of the cathode product (i.e., Cd ingot including the U/TRU deposits) produced from the LCC electrowinning and the RAR processes. The essential technologies that include the development of effective LCC structure [7], RAR methods [8], analytical technologies [9], and computational model of electrowinning cell [10] have been developed to enhance the operation efficiency of electrowinning process. In order to demonstrate the developed technologies, the engineering-scale electrowinning system of PRIDE was established.…”
