“…From experiments in cardiac resuscitation in dogs it is known that elevated brain lactate accumulation and increased neurologic deficit are associated with modest hyperglycemia in the setting of global CNS ischemia. 22 These results suggest lactate accumulation as a possible mechanism to explain worsened neurologic outcome after spinal cord ischemia in the rat with hyperglycemia.…”

“…The first study was performed in monkeys receiving glucose solution before cardiac arrest that exacerbated the neurological and histopathological outcome (22). Several additional studies have repeated these result following global ischemia in monkeys (32), cats (33), and dogs (34, 35) showing increased neuronal cell death, neurological dysfunction, and mortality. In rats, preischemic hyperglycemia induced post injury seizure and increased structural damage (36, 37).…”

“…In the following years, the deleterious effect of acute hyperglycemia on brain injury after global ischemia was confirmed in other studies (Kalimo et al, 1981; Pulsinelli et al, 1982; Warner et al, 1995). Natale et al (Natale et al, 1990) demonstrated increased mortality in dogs with moderate hyperglycemia (18 ± 0.9 mmol/L) following global ischemia and this was associated with increased lactate levels in the cortex. Interestingly, Sieber et al (Sieber et al, 1994) observed a similar drop but faster recovery of cerebral pH values in diabetic animals (3 months of diabetes duration) compared to that observed in acute hyperglycemia without diabetes following incomplete global ischemia.…”
