Electrospun Polycaprolactone Membrane Incorporated with Biosynthesized Silver Nanoparticles as Effective Wound Dressing Material

Abstract: Biosynthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) incorporated polycaprolactone (PCL) nanomembrane was prepared by electrospinning as a cost-effective nanocomposite for application as an antimicrobial agent against wound infection. The nanocomposite membrane was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM). The hydrophilicity analysis of electrospun membranes as evaluated by water contact angle measurement showed the change o… Show more

“…To evaluate the blend nature, FT‐IR spectra of pure PCL membrane along with PCL/PEG blend membrane is depicted in Figure . As expected, FT‐IR spectrum of both membranes exhibited PCL characteristic peaks at 2944, 2865, and 1735 cm −1 that assigns to CH 3 asymmetric stretching, CH 3 symmetric stretching, and ester carbonyl group, respectively . According to literature, PEG shows the characteristic peaks at 2945 and 2860 cm −1 which corresponds to CH stretching and CH 2 stretching, respectively .…”

“…Although NMs are considered as a ''rising star'' for the development of antimicrobial agents, 356 the poor dispersibility and thermal instability make them difficult for practical applications. 357 Alternatively, microorganism-mediated synthesized Ag NPs can be further loaded onto inorganic supports. They display a low level of cytotoxicity to mammalian cells.…”

“…In PCL spectrum, two characteristic absorption peaks at 1,166 cm -1 and 1,726 cm -1 were related to C-O-C and C=O bonds, and peaks at 2,864 cm -1 and 2,930 cm -1 corresponded to the C-H bond. 33,38,39 After DA coating, a broad peak around 3,100-3,600 cm -1 corresponding to the stretching vibration band of phenolic hydroxyls was observed in the spectrum of PCL/DA. 13 The peak became sharper in the PCL/NS0.5, PCL/NS1.0 and PCL/NS2.0 spectra, suggesting the interaction between NS and DA.…”
