Electrospun nanofibers with application in nanocomposites

Abstract: The use of fine fiber has become an important design tool for filter media. Nanofibers-based filter media have some advantages such as lower energy consumption, longer filter life, high filtration capacity, easier maintenance, low weight rather than other filter media. The nanofibers-based filter media made up of fibers of diameter ranging from 100 to 1,000 nm can be conveniently produce by electrospinning technique. Common filter media have been prepared with a layer of fine fiber on typically forming the ups… Show more

“…Another promising way for reinforcing polymer composites is to use continuous polymeric nanofibers formed by electrospinning, which is an effective and low-cost approach. [16][17][18] Polymer nanofibers are continuous, long fibers that display an extremely high aspect ratio and do not present fiber edges that can act as obvious stress concentration points. Moreover, the high stretching rate (estimated 10 5 s À1 ) and the high elongation (draw ratio up to 10 4 ) of the solidifying jet enables the spontaneous orientation of the macromolecular chains along fiber direction, thus contributing to increase the modulus and the strength of the fibers.…”

“…The biggest challenge here is to ensure good adhesion between the nanofiber layer and substrate fabric 14, 15. Conventional laminating methods, such as gluing and thermal pressing, are not suitable for the preparation of layered composites with electrospun nanofibers, because these methods will destroy the microstructure of nanofiber mats and eliminate their unique properties 16, 17. Atmospheric plasma treatment appears to be a promising method to improve the interfacial adhesion in NFLCs.…”

“…Recently, silk nanofiberbased filter media that contain fibers of diameter ranging from 100 to 1,000 nm have been conveniently constructed by electrospinning technique. Improved multiple structures have been developed in this study in which a controlled amount of fine fiber was placed on both sides of the media to result in a substantial improvement in filtration efficiency and lifetime [63].…”
