Electroencephalogram based brain-computer interface: Applications, challenges, and opportunities

Abstract: Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) is an exciting and emerging research area for researchers and scientists. It is a suitable combination of software and hardware to operate any device mentally. This review emphasizes the significant stages in the BCI domain, current problems, and state-of-the-art findings. This article also covers how current results can contribute to new knowledge about BCI, an overview of BCI from its early developments to recent advancements, BCI applications, challenges, and future direction… Show more

“…87 Various EEG devices are available in small, wearable, battery-powered, and wireless brain–computer interfaces (BCIs), 12 but few are plug-and-play devices. 97 The technology has critical limitations for use in community settings, including poor signal detection on the scalp, degrading spatial resolution 5,12 ; compromise between number of sensors and memory and power requirements 56 ; and data artefacts from extraneous signals. 57 There are also unresolved questions of ground truth for psychological states.…”

“…This may entail considering the use of AI-based wearable devices, such as wearable accelerometers, that are capable of capturing motion data and providing insights into a patient's level of physical activity, gait, and balance [42]. Alternatively, an electroencephalogram can be used to monitor brain activity and detect anomalies, thus serving as a means of collecting detailed and accurate data [43].…”

“…New technologies are emerging to offer individuals with severe motor disabilities an alternative interaction system through brain signals, known as Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) [Yadav and Maini 2023]. BCIs consist of hardware and software components that detect patterns in brain activity, translating them into commands for device control [Yadav and Maini 2023].…”

BCIs consist of hardware and software components that detect patterns in brain activity, translating them into commands for device control [Yadav and Maini 2023]. Examples of electrophysiological patterns utilized in BCIs include Event Related Synchronization and Desynchronization (ERS/ERD), Steady-state Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEP), and P300 Evoked Potentials [Yadav and Maini 2023].…”
