Electric Vehicles for Public Transportation in Power Systems: A Review of Methodologies

Abstract: The market for electric vehicles (EVs) has grown with each year, and EVs are considered to be a proper solution for the mitigation of urban pollution. So far, not much attention has been devoted to the use of EVs for public transportation, such as taxis and buses. However, a massive introduction of electric taxis (ETs) and electric buses (EBs) could generate issues in the grid. The challenges are different from those of private EVs, as their required load is much higher and the related time constraints must be… Show more

“…Transportation, especially autos, consumes large amounts of fossil fuels and has a significant impact on air pollution, greenhouse gas emission, and global warming [1,2]. China Industry Information Network (CIIN) shows that auto production increased from 2.07 million to 24.5 million during 2000-2015, with an average annual growth rate of 17.92% [3].…”

“…Yu et al [19] also believed that HVs have better power and economy than FVs, which is mainly because battery energy optimizes power efficiency. Later, Clairand et al [1] pointed out that EVs are more eco-friendly and efficient than HVs. e development of EVs was considered to be a particularly promising strategy to promote the sustainable development of the auto industry [20,21].…”

“…Obviously, all the above studies have focused on private electric vehicles, and little attention has been paid to electric taxis. Electric taxis are different from private electric vehicles in terms of power characteristics, running time, and power consumption [14]. Specifically, compared with private electric vehicles and electric buses, electric taxi owners are completely profit oriented.…”

“…The growing number of electric vehicles (EV) raises many concerns about EV supply equipment (EVSE) [1]. In particular, the fact that the number of EV charging stations is not keeping up with the increase in the number of EVs is the greatest problem for consumers who are considering buying EVs [2].…”
