Abstract: Abstract:In the present study, the effectiveness of Mimosa pudica tannins (MPT) in neutralizing the lethality of Naja kaouthia venom was compared with commercially derived tannins. Preincubation of MPT with N. kaouthia venom maintained 100% survival of mice after 24 hours. The mouse group in which there was no preincubation, no protection against the effects of the venom was observed. “…The antiophidian ability of P. reticulata extract was attributed to the presence of tannins, which act by precipitating venom proteins, also reproduced by commercial tannic acid. Both tannins and tannic acid significantly inhibit not only the impairment of muscle strength induced by Crotalus durissus terrificus and Bothrops jararacussu venoms, but also the lethality of cobra (Naja kaouthia) venom (8,33). This protein-precipitating property of P. reticulata extract could limit its clinical use as a topical application -mainly against the local manifestation in cases of Bothrops snakebites due to high myotoxic action, but strategies for producing a hemoperfuser containing tannic acid and/or plant tannins as adsorbent could be considered for treating severe snake envenomation.…”

These tannins appear to be able to ligate to the proteins found in venom during the incubation period in an unspecified fashion (Ambikabothy et al, 2011;Sia et al, 2011), which may account for the high efficiency of inhibition recorded in both the in vivo and in vitro assays run in the present study.
