The indiscriminate disposal of fresh and used motor oil into the environment (land and water) is a common practice in Nigeria and this practice has contributed to its soil contamination and makes up a greater percentage of polluted ground in the world. Over the years, the contamination of auto-mechanic workshops by used oil and fresh oil has been left uncared for, Soil contaminated with fresh and used motor oil creates a serious effect on plant tissues, soil components, and its microorganisms, human and other animal health. Optimization of a biostimulation process used in the treatment of used motor oil contaminated soil has been carried out. D-optimal design of response surface methodology with one numerical factor and a categorical factor at two levels was employed to generate 10 experimental runs for the biostimulation system. The input variables of the system were palm bunch ash (a stimulant) and pollution level. The two levels of the latter factor considered were 5% and 10 % (w/w) pollution level, while the response of the system was oil and grease (O&G) removal. The biostimulation experiments were carried out according to the RSM design, and the experimental data obtained were analyzed using the quadratic model. The results of the analyses showed that the developed quadratic model was able to represent the system with both input factors affecting the system significantly since p-values for the model was found to be less than 0.05. The results also showed that O&G removal was affected by both the PBA and the pollution level. It was also observed from the numerical optimisation carried out that 100 % and 83.36 % O&G removal was attained at 5 % and 10 % pollution level respectively after ten weeks of the study. The findings of this work revealed that palm bunch ash (PBA) can be used as a stimulant for the bioremediation of used motor oil contaminated soil. Thus, its application in the treatment of oil-contaminated soil is highly recommended.

Background: Raw palm oil mill effluent is toxic effluent capable of posing serious threat to plants when discharged to the environment. In developing countries, the untreated effluent is often discharged to the surrounding land due to high cost associated with its treatment. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impact of palm oil mill effluent treated with locally available material on the growth of maize. Methods: The bunch ash obtained from local material by burning de-fruited oil palm bunch was used for the treatment. The experiment was consisted of eight treatments of concentrations of palm oil mill effluent viz 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, 4.0%, 5.0%, 6.0%, 7.0% and 8.0%. The treatment was carried out on potted maize plants with six replications. Four kilograms of soil was weighed into each pot. Six pots were labelled as control, with untreated palm oil mill effluent added to them. Eight other groups consisting of six pots each were treated with 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0%, 4.0%, 5.0%, 6.0%, 7.0% and 8.0% concentrations of the effluent. The maize seeds were planted one in each pot to avoid overcrowding. The pots were transferred to greenhouse and each pot was moistened daily with the specified concentration of the palm oil mill effluent. The growth rate, plant height and leaf length of the maize plants were thereafter determined. Result: The 8.0% concentration of bunch ash in the effluent had the highest expected effect on all the parameters whereas the control gave the lowest expected effect. The effects increased as the concentration of bunch ash in the effluent increased, indicating that increased concentration of bunch ash recorded significant increase in growth rate, height and leaf length of maize. The analysis of variance for the obtained data showed that the effects of the different concentrations were significantly different. This study provides an alternative and cost effective method of ameliorating the toxicity of palm oil mill effluent to plants.

The processing of palm oil from the fruits of the African oil palm generates an increasing amounts of solid waste. The production of beneficial products for various applications from the oil palm wastes would reduce the amount of unwanted materials produced and contribute to a healthier environment. In this research, fractions were derived from the filtrate of the oil palm deseeded fruit head ash by fractional crystallization. Their physicochemical properties, cation, and anion compositions were determined by standard methods. Three hygroscopic oil palm ash fractions, namely crystals, anhydrous, and sediment, were obtained from the filtrate of the soaked ash. The crystals fraction showed significantly higher mean values than the anhydrous and sediment in conductivity and total organic matter (p<0.0001 each), salinity (p<0.01 and p<0.0001), and total organic carbon (p<0.01), while anhydrous had higher total dissolved solids than the crystals (p<0.01) and sediments (p<0.05). pH and melting points for the crystals and anhydrous compounds were similar (11.07 and <330) and higher than that of the sediment (10.29 and 284.2). Compared to the crystals, anhydrous fractions reveal significantly lower values in iron, phosphate (p<0.01 individually), zinc, chloride, nitrate, and sulphate (p<0.05 each), while sediments had significantly higher zinc (p<0.05) and nitrate (p<0.0001) and lower iron, chloride (p<0.05 each), sulphate and phosphate (p<0.0001 respectively) mean values. From this study, the isolation of three fractions from the oil palm empty fruit bunch ash with different physicochemical properties and ionic compositions was achieved. These fractions may serve as useful resources for utilization in various fields of research and production processes.
