Efficacy of Monensin for the Prevention of Subclinical Ketosis in Lactating Dairy Cows

Abstract: A total of 1010 dry cows and pregnant heifers was randomly selected from 25 dairy farms near Guelph, Ontario, Canada to receive either a controlled-release capsule of monensin or a placebo at 3 wk prior to expected calving. Serum samples were obtained at the time of treatment administration, and both serum and milk samples were collected at wk 1, 2, 3, 6, and 9 postcalving. The threshold used to define subclinical ketosis was selected a priori at a concentration of > or = 1200 mumol/L of beta-hydroxybutyrate. … Show more

“…Incidence of subclinical ketosis was calculated as the proportion of cows that had plasma BHBA concentration >1400 mmol/l (Duffield et al, 1998;Carrier et al, 2004) at the time of blood sampling. The percentage of cows that experienced single episode of subclinical ketosis was calculated as the proportion of cows that had plasma BHBA concentration >1400 mmol/l at one sampling time point.…”

“…Maximal blood levels in healthy cows are 0.48 mM for acetoacetate and 0.85 mM for D-b-hydroxybutyrate [2]. However, a mean level over 1.0 mM for both ketones [3] or for D-b-hydroxybutyrate alone [4,5] is considered, in practice, to be the top limit of normality in the cow. This value is below the concentration required to sustain bovine embryo development in vitro [1].…”

“…Duffield et al (1998aDuffield et al ( , 1998bDuffield et al ( , 1999 demonstraram o potencial de administração de monensina através de cápsulas de liberação lenta (335 mg/dia de monensina por 95 dias) para vacas no pré-parto. Em um experimento que contou com mais de 1000 vacas e novilhas estes autores observaram redução nas concentrações de betahidroxibutirato (BHBA) e aumento nas concentrações de glicose e uréia plasmática com a administração do ionóforo.…”
