BackgroundThere is renewed interest in effective measures to control Zika and dengue vectors. A synthesis of published literature with a focus on the quality of evidence is warranted to determine the effectiveness of vector control strategies.MethodologyWe conducted a meta-review assessing the effectiveness of any Aedes control measure. We searched Scopus and Medline for relevant reviews through to May 2016. Titles, abstracts and full texts were assessed independently for inclusion by two authors. Data extraction was performed in duplicate and validity of the evidence was assessed using GRADE criteria.Findings13 systematic reviews that investigated the effect of control measures on entomological parameters or disease incidence were included. Biological controls seem to achieve better reduction of entomological indices than chemical controls, while educational campaigns can reduce breeding habitats. Integrated vector control strategies may not always increase effectiveness. The efficacy of any control programme is dependent on local settings, intervention type, resources and study duration, which may partly explain the varying degree of success between studies. Nevertheless, the quality of evidence was mostly low to very low due to poor reporting of study design, observational methodologies, heterogeneity, and indirect outcomes, thus hindering an evidence-based recommendation.ConclusionsThe evidence for the effectiveness of Aedes control measures is mixed. Chemical control, which is commonly used, does not appear to be associated with sustainable reductions of mosquito populations over time. Indeed, by contributing to a false sense of security, chemical control may reduce the effectiveness of educational interventions aimed at encouraging local people to remove mosquito breeding sites. Better quality studies of the impact of vector control interventions on the incidence of human infections with Dengue or Zika are still needed.

Background: Dengue fever is an acute infectious disease for which there are currently no specific drugs or effective vaccines available. Therefore its prevention & control solely rest on vector control strategies, for which behavioural change of the community is a requirement. Hence, the aim of our study was to implement a standardised behaviour change communication intervention strategy (BCC) and to measure its impact on the population in terms of awareness, attitude and practice regarding dengue and its vector control. Methods: This study was carried out in a ward in Njarackal Panchayath in Ernakulam district of Kerala. An initial baseline survey was conducted to assess the current awareness, attitude and practices of dengue & its vector control among the residents of the ward. This was followed by the implementation of standardized BCC Intervention strategy. A post intervention survey was carried out two months later to analyze its impact. Results: This BCC strategy resulted in increasing the awareness regarding dengue and its vector control even though it was found not to be statistically significant. However, the strategy was able to bring about a significant change in the attitude and practice of the people with regard to dengue prevention and control strategies. Conclusions: This BCC strategy was successful in this population due to community acceptance, however it requires constant reinforcement for its sustainability.

Sustainable ternary treatment system for greywater and potential reuse

Adopting a greywater treatment system that provides economical, effective, and sustainable treated greywater over a longer span helps to address water scarcity. The present study focuses on treating greywater generated from hostels using a floating plant treatment system (FPTS) planted with water hyacinth. The additional units, a sand filter and an activated charcoal filter, were attached in series to FPTS to improve the treated greywater quality. The treatment system was operated for 90 days with daily monitoring of influent and effluent parameters. The treatment performance was evaluated based on the removal efficiency for total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia, sulphate, phosphate, and faecal coliform (FC) of 74.81% ± 5.74%, 99.76% ± 0.05%, 95.70% ± 4.10%, 99.16% ± 2.08%, 48.22% ± 1.80%, and 100%, 97.27% ± 1.48%, respectively. The study showed that the system effectively treats greywater, making it suitable for non‐potable purposes on educational institution's campuses.
