Mentha pulegium L. is a medicinal and aromatic plant belonging to the Labiatae family present in the humid to the arid bioclimatic regions of Tunisia. We studied the effect of different salt concentrations on plant growth, mineral composition and antioxidant responses. Physiological and biochemical parameters were assessed in the plant organs after 2 weeks of salt treatment with 25, 50, 75 and 100 mM NaCl. Results showed that, growth was reduced even by 25 mM, and salt effect was more pronounced in shoots (leaves and stems) than in roots. This growth decrease was accompanied by a restriction in tissue hydration and K ? uptake, as well as an increase in Na ? levels in all organs. Considering the response of antioxidant enzymes to salt, leaves and roots reacted differently to saline conditions. Leaf and root guaiacol peroxidase activity showed an increase by different concentration of NaCl, but superoxide dismutase activity in the same organs showed a slight modification in NaCl-treated leaves and roots. Moreover, polyphenol contents and antioxidant activity were analysed in M. pulegium leaves and roots under salt constraint. The analysis showed an increase of total polyphenol content (2.41-8.17 mg gallic acid equivalent g -1 dry weight) in leaves. However, methanol extract of leaves at 100 mM NaCl displayed the highest DPPHÁ scavenging ability with the lowest IC 50 value (0.27 lg ml -1 ) in comparison with control which exhibited IC 50 equal to 0.79 lg ml -1 .

Medicago sativa is the main perennial legume in many places in the world such as South-East Tunisian Oases. The widespread use of this species is due to its high adaptability, forage yield potential and to its good quality. Furthermore, the succession of drought years in South-East Tunisian Oases especially in Gabes influenced fodder distribution and digestibility. To a better understanding of the variation of the nutritive value of (Medicago sativa L.) plants, the effect of four drought levels (25%; 50%; 75% and 100% of field capacity) on nutritive quality was investigated for three populations [P1 (Gannouch); P2 (Chenini) and P3 (Tebelbou)] cultivated in these oases. Results showed that drought reduced leaves, shoots and roots dry matter, while this effect was more pronounced for above organs (values reached 1.2 mg) than below organs (values reached 1.8 mg). However, drought decreased phosphor, calcium, magnesium and nitrogen contents, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre and in acid detergent lignin content for P1 and P2, this stress enhanced potassium uptake, leaves shoots and roots shoots ratios especially for P3, values passed from 1.56 for control treatment to 2.06 for 25% of field capacity. This population seems to be the most resistant to drought by maintaining reduced leaf area and elevated ratios. This result indicates that Medicago sativa succeed to maintain a good nutritive value under stress conditions. To the best of our knowledge, it is important to study the effect of this stress on others varieties to more understand its effect on nutritive value. ARTICLE HISTORY

RÉSUMÉObjectifs : Le travail présenté ici a pour objectif de décrire l'effet de la salinité sur la croissance et la distribution des principaux éléments minéraux chez le bananier. Méthodologie et résultats : L'étude de l'effet de la salinité a été réalisée sur deux variétés du bananier (Musa acuminata L), la grande naine et la petite naine issues de culture in vitro. Les variétés testées ont été combinées à quatre niveaux de chlorure de sodium (NaCl) à savoir : 0, 2, 4 et 6 grammes par litre (g/l). Les résultats ont montré la réduction de la biomasse aérienne et racinaire, une accumulation de potassium dans la partie aérienne et de sodium dans la partie racinaire, ainsi qu'une réduction d'absorption de calcium et de magnésium et une légère variation d'azote dès la concentration 4g/l. Une certaine tolérance aux sels a été notée chez la variété grande naine comparativement à la petite naine. Cette tolérance pourrait être liée à une bonne sélectivité vis-à vis du potassium. Les variétés étudiées se comportent comme des plantes exclusives. Conclusion et application de la recherche : Les caractéristiques ioniques de la variété de bananier, la grande naine, diffèrent de celles de la petite naine, Les résultats obtenus confirment que l'amélioration de la productivité des bananiers au Maroc ne peut être réalisée que par des travaux destinés à élaborer un matériel génétique adapté à partir de la variété grande naine. Le choix doit s'effectuer sur la base d'un grand nombre de caractères (morphologiques, biochimiques physiologiques) contrôlant les déterminismes génétiques complexes de la tolérance à la salinité. Methods and results:The study of the effect of salinity was carried out on two banana varieties (Musa acuminata L), the grand Naine and the petite Naine from in vitro culture. The varieties tested were combined with four levels of NaCl (0, 2, 4 and 6 gal / l). Results showed the reduction of biomass and root accumulation of potassium in the shoot and sodium in the root. There was reduced absorption of calcium and magnesium and a slight variation from the nitrogen concentration of 4g / l. Some salt tolerance was noted in the Grande Naine compared to the petite Naine variety. This tolerance may be associated with a good selectivity towards potassium. Conclusion and application of research: ionic characteristics of the banana variety, the Grande Naine differs from the petite Naine. The results confirm that improvements in the productivity of banana in Morocco should be achieved by work to develop Grande Naine germplasm by the use of a large number of characters (morphological, biochemical, physiological) controlling complex genetic determinism of salinity tolerance
