This study was designed to evaluate the effect of aqueous extract of Citrullus lanatus (water melon) seeds on alloxan induced-diabetic wistar rats. The Wistar rats were grouped into 11 of 3 rats in each. Groups 2-11 received single dose of 120 mg/kg b.wt of alloxan monohydrate intraperitoneally. Groups 4 and 5 orally received a dose of 100 mg/kg b.wt of metformin for 7 and 21 days respectively. Groups 6, 8 and 10 orally received 200 mg/kg b.wt, 400 mg/kg b.wt, and 600 mg/kg b.wt. of the extract respectively for 7 days while groups 7, 9 and 11 orally received 200 mg/kg b.wt., 400 mg/kg b.wt and 600 mg/kg b.wt of the extract respectively for 21 days. Blood samples were collected 24 hours after 7 and 21 days of treatment and selected biochemical parameters were determined; glucose determination, pancreatic α- amylase activities and lipid profile, while histopathology examination of the pancreas was also examined. Qualitative phytochemical result showed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponin, tannin, oxalate and phytate. Flavonoids (176.87 ug/g) were most abundant and phytate was the least occurring anti nutrient (6.75±0.06). Citrullus lanatus seeds extract significantly (p≤0.05) decreased the plasma glucose levels, pancreatic α-amylase activities, total cholesterol, triglycerides and lipoproteins while there was a significant (p≤0.05) increase in high density lipoproprotein levels on 7 and 21 days in all the extract treated groups. The histopathological examination of the pancreas showed regeneration of pancreatic cells in all the extract treated groups. The aqueous extract of Citrullus lanatus (water melon) seeds is rich in phytochemicals with antioxidant properties hence could serve as novel herbal antidiabetic agent.

Objective: Diabetes is a group of disorders characterized by high blood glucose levels. Disturbances in serum electrolytes like sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) are found in diabetes. The purpose of the study was to investigate the disturbances in concentrations of serum electrolytes in hyperglycemic crisis and the effect of syzygium cumini and momordica charantia standardized aqueous extracts on serum electrolytes (Na+and K+) in normal and diabetic rats.Methods: Diabetes is induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan at a dose of 120 mg/kg b. w in rats. Rats were divided into 5 groups (normal control, disease control, metformin, test 1 and test 2). In test groups 1 and 2, SASESC (standardized aqueous seed extract of syzygium cumini) and SAFEMC (standardized aqueous fruit extract of momordica charantia) were respectively administered orally to alloxan induced diabetic rats, and their serum electrolyte levels were observed at 1st, 4th, 7th and 14th days.Results: By the 14thday, the Na+ and K+ levels in groups 4 and 5 were almost normal. However, in group 3 (standard), Na+levels were relatively lower and K+ levels were relatively higher than groups 4 and 5 (test). In group 2 (disease control) as compared to group 1 (normal control), a decrease in Na+ and increase in K+ levels was observed even on day 14.Conclusion: Treatment with anti diabetic drugs like metformin, syzygium cumini (test-1), momordica charantia (test-2) restored the electrolyte levels almost back to normal over a period of study (14 d). There was significant (**P<0.01, *P<0.05) normalization of electrolyte levels in diabetic rats. It was concluded that syzygium cumini and momordica charantia showed better efficiency in restoring the electrolyte imbalance as compared to metformin during our study.

Aim:To evaluate the effects of Citrullus lanatus juice (CLJ) on fructose-induced morphometric and metabolic derangements in offspring of Wistar rats. Study Design: On Post-Natal Day (PND) 1, morphometric indices were measured. Offspring were weaned on PND 21 and sacrificed on PND 90 under thiopentone anesthesia. Blood glucose level, serum leptin, lipid profile, oxidative status and tissue histology were assessed. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Place and Duration of Study: Methodology: Twenty pregnant rats were randomly assigned into four groups (n=5) and had their drinking water modified from Gestation Day (GD) 1-21 as follows; Control (water), Fructose (10%w/v), CLJ ( 50%v/v) and Fructose + CLJ (FCLJ). Asogwa et al.; JALSI,12(1): 1-13, 2017; Article no.JALSI.33815 2 Results: Blood glucose levels increased in both offspring from Fructose (53.3Â±0.2; 69.5Â±0.2) compared with Control (46Â±0.3; 52.3Â±0.0) and decreased in FCLJ (43.3Â±0.4; 46Â±0.1) compared with Fructose. Pup's weight increased in male offspring from Fructose (5.3Â±0.0) compared with Control (5.1Â±0.0) and decreased in FCLJ (5.1Â±0.0) compared with Fructose. Malondialdehyde increased in male offspring from Fructose (0.01Â±0.0) compared with Control (0.009Â±0.0). Original Research ArticleLiver histology showed moderate congestion of the central venules and portal tract in male offspring from fructose group, while it appeared normal and not congested in offspring of FCLJ. Conclusion: CLJ ameliorated the adverse effects of maternal fructose intake on blood glucose, lipid metabolism, morphometric indices and antioxidant status in offspring.
