Effects of Thermotherapy on Th1/Th2 Cells in Esophageal Cancer Patients Treated with Radiotherapy

Abstract: Background: To investigate the effects of double radiofrequency hyperthermia on Th1/Th2 cells in esophageal cancer patients treated with radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: 22 patients with esophageal cancer were divided into a radiotherapy group (10 cases) and a combined group (double radiofrequency hyperthermia combined with radiotherapy group, 12 cases). Both groups received conventional radiotherapy using a cobalt-60 therapy apparatus (TD60-66Gy/30-33F). Patients in the combined group also underwent doubl… Show more

“…However, when dysfunction occurs, the balance is disturbed, known as 'the shifting of Th1/Th2 balance' (18). In addition, this may cause different types of diseases, such as cancer (19)(20)(21), AIDS (22) and autoimmune diseases (23). When the balance drifts from Th1 to Th2, it may cause antitumor immunosuppression (24).…”

“…Interferon gamma (IFNγ) is one of the central cytokines that coordinates tumor immune responses and the associated biological consequences [ 2 ]. IFN-γ is a pleiotropic cytokine with multiple biological functions including immune cell activation [ 3 , 4 ] and induction of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules both in normal and neoplastic cells [ 5 , 6 ]. Besides its ability to trigger cell cycle arrest and apoptosis [ 7 10 ], IFN-γ shows anti-tumor activity in patients with advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) [ 11 ] or non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) [ 12 ].…”

“…In a clinical study, the 5-year survival rate of cervical cancer patients with high CD4 + / CD8 + ratio was higher than that of patients with low CD4 + / CD8 + ratio, increasing the CD4 + / CD8 + ratio can slow the progression of cervical cancer and improve its prognosis (21) . It is generally believed that Th1 enhances tumor immune surveillance of tumor while Th2 associated with the tumor immune evasion can suppress the function of Th1 cells (22) . Th17 can promote tumor angiogenesis in the promotion of tumor progression (6) .…”
