Effects of the Amount and Type of Diol Ring Openers on the Properties of Oligolactide Acrylates for UV-Curable Printing Inks

Abstract: This study aimed to synthesize low viscosity oligolactide acrylates for UV-curable inks from oligolactide diols. Firstly, low molecular weight oligolactide diols were prepared by ring opening reaction of L-lactide with diols. Oligolactide acrylates were then synthesized by functionalizing the oligolactide diols with acrylic acid. In this study, three diol ring openers having short and long alkyl chain length were used to investigate the effects of the amount and type of diols on the properties of the o… Show more

“…In this research, PCLDA was synthesized from a PCL diol by end-chain modification or acrylation. Previously, S. Kulsirswad et al 25 synthesized oligolactide acrylate by an esterification reaction between oligolactide diol and acrylic acid. Such a hydroxyl end group of oligolactide diol can react with carboxylic groups of acrylic acid to obtain oligomers consisting of vinyl double bonds.…”

“…UV inks are cured under a chemical process of polymerisation, which are motivated by free radicals under UV light. Therefore, UV inks are welcomed by printing manufactory and used in many areas such as plastic, paper, furniture, electrotechnics, machinery, and so on [1][2][3][4][5]. However, the growth in exterior applications of UV inks has raised questions about their durability, especially resistance to light aging.…”

“…1 In recent years, an intensive investigation has been done to develop sustainable materials from vegetable oil, [2][3][4] rosins, [5][6][7] lignin, 8,9 gallic acid, 10,11 and other renewable raw materials. 12 Photoinduced curing technology which possessed superior properties including high speed, fast production rate at ambient temperature, low energy consumption, less environmental damage, and free of volatile organic compounds, has a wide range of applications in coatings, 13,14 adhesives, 15,16 inks, 17,18 dental composites, 19 and composites. 20,21 Therefore, incorporating photoinduced curing technology into renewable materials will provide a promising "green + green" strategy to current organic coating industry.…”
