Effects of Temporal and Spatial Changes in Wetlands on Regional Carbon Storage in the Naoli River Basin, Sanjiang Plain, China

Abstract: The Naoli River (NLR) Basin is a crucial distribution area for wetlands in China. Investigating the link between land use changes and carbon storage in this basin is of significant importance for protecting regional ecosystems and promoting the sustainable development of the social economy. This paper uses long-term Landsat satellite images provided on the GEE (Google Earth Engine) platform and the random forest classification algorithm to create spatial distribution maps of land use in the NLR Basin from 1993… Show more

“…Wetlands play a significant role in the fixation and release of greenhouse gases like methane and carbon dioxide, and variations in their size have a direct impact on carbon stock fluctuations (Murray et al 2023;Zhou et al 2023) (Fluet-Chouinard et al 2023;Lu et al 2021). This shows that wetland reclamation caused a significant loss of soil carbon, and wetland restoration is becoming urgent (Spieles, 2022).…”

“…The Naoli River Basin, situated in Northeast China's Sanjiang Plain, stands as a critical hub for commodity grain production, playing a pivotal role in upholding China's food security [27,28]. Over the past four decades, owing to shifts in the grain market and policy dynamics, the region's grain production structure has undergone multiple adjustments.…”
