Effects of peritoneal lavage with lidocaine on survival of rats with fecal peritonitis

Abstract: PURPOSE: To study the effects of peritoneal lavage with a 2% lidocaine solution, on the survival of the rats submitted to peritonitis caused by their own feces. METHODS: Forty-eight Wistar rats, weighting between 300g and 330g (mean, 311,45 ±9,67g), were submitted to laparotomy 6 hours following induction of fecal peritonitis. Animals were randomly divided into four groups of 12 each as follows: 1- Control, no therapy; 2- Drying of the abdominal cavity; 3- Peritoneal lavage with saline and drying; 4- Peritonea… Show more

“…Previous studies demonstrated a reduction in rat fecal peritonitis mortality when the animals were treated with lavage containing lidocaine 8 and bupivacaine 9 . Ropivacaine, despite presenting an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect more discrete than the other anesthetics 10 10 .…”

“…Furthermore, the follow-up, post intraperitoneal treatment, in the present study was longer than others performed in mice 31 and rats 32 .…”

“…Additionally, the follow-up is usually short in time, and there is no mention to mean age of the animals [29][30][31][32] . Almost all of these studies lend no support to concept that antibiotics or others substances produce reduction of the morbidity and mortality for sepsis secondary to peritonitis 9,30 .…”

“…In a rat septic peritonitis model, lidocaine hydrochloride solution was an effective prophylaxis against adhesion, probably due to blocking the development of oxidative stress (Brocco et al 2008, Yuzbasioglu et al 2008Arung et al 2011;Ward and Panitch 2011). In another study, lidocaine was effective for the treatment of peritonitis, while NaCl 0.9% minimally affected adhesion formation (Gallos et al 2004).…”

“…Thus, local rinsing using normal saline is usually effective for preventing adhesion formation following LOPU (Teixeira et al 2011;Teixeira et al 2013). Lidocaine rinsing solution revealed promising results in rats with respect to the prevention of intraperitoneal adhesion formation, possibly due to modulation of oxidative stress, in an experimental peritonitis model (Brocco et al 2008;Yuzbasioglu et al 2008).…”
