Effects of Nano and Microplastics on the Inflammatory Process: In Vitro and In Vivo Studies Systematic Review

Abstract: Background: Microplastics (MPs) and Nanoplastics (NPs) are plastic fragments that spread in the environment and accumulate in the human body, so they have been becoming a worldwide environmental concern because of their potential human health effects. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the prospective impact of MPs and NPs on the inflammatory process. Methods: Electronic article search was performed on PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science international databases from 1 Jan 2012 to 31 Dec 2021. S… Show more

“…FGF8 also causes inflammation. ( Sun et al, 2021 , Pulvirenti et al, 2022 ). When human gingival fibroblasts were incubated with MPs isolated from the Adriatic Sea, inflammatory pathways NFkb and MyD88 were activated in cells, causing inflammation ( Diomede et al 2022 ).…”

“…An example of these mixtures include micro/nanoplastics, emergent pollutants that have become a significant environmental concern, especially when combined with other contaminants [46]. These anthropogenic contaminants are ubiquitous materials and humans are estimated to ingest tens of thousands to millions of these particles annually [47], while potential toxic consequences from exposure to them arise from microplastics/nanoplastics themselves, not only from diffused monomers and additives, but also from sorbed contaminants [48,49].…”

“…Anyway, the nanoplastics can be confirmed. The possible adverse effect of nanoplastics is unclear yet, but we should be cautious since the risk assessment is yet conducted and these nanoplastics can potentially contaminate our food [4,[46][47][48].…”
