Effects of Merogel coverage on wound healing and ostial patency in endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy for primary chronic dacryocystitis

Abstract: Purpose To investigate the effects of Merogel coverage on ostial patency in endonasal endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (EES-DCR) for primary chronic dacryocystitis (PCD). Methods In all, 260 patients with unilateral PCD were randomized into two groups: the Merogel group and the control group. All patients underwent EES-DCR. The Merogel group received Merogel covering the wound 1-2 mm around the ostium and the control group received no treatment. Patients were followed up for 9 months. The mucosal epithelializa… Show more

“…In vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) is a novel, noninvasive, high-resolution tool that enables in vivo analysis of the MG to provide insight into its structure and any structural changes under normal and pathologic conditions,[67891011] of which many are not visible by slit-lamp examination. In this study, we separated those patients with severe dry eye symptoms from those with mild symptoms, evaluated by a questionnaire of Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Salisbury Eye Evaluation Questionnaire (SEEQ), the clinical signs of dry eye, and the assessment of MG status and function observed by regular methods combined with IVCM, aiming to explore the relationship between dry eye with different symptoms and MG structural alteration.…”

“…In the field of endoscopic sinus surgery, a number of papers have investigated whether or not nasal packing, both in general and in regard to the type used, affected nasal mucosal re-epitheliazation, fibrous tissue proliferation, granulation, and synechiae formation [8,11-13]. More recently, the effects of nasal packing materials after DCR have started to draw attention [10], but there are no well-established conclusions due to the scarcity of reports. Furthermore, the lack of standardization in the measurement of DCR surgical outcomes makes it difficult to compare and interpret the results of previous studies [15].…”
