Abstract: -Aims:To identify the effects of match location, quality of opponents and match status on possession during the 2015/16 Season of England Premier League. “…In order to control a football game, a team needs to have more frequent possession of the ball. Similar findings, but for different leagues, can be found from other studies (Lago-Peñas & Dellal , 2010;Armatas, Zaggelidis, Skoufas, Papadopoulou, & Fragkos, 2009;GÖRAL, 2015;Kempe, Vogelbein, Memmert, & Nopp, 2014;Aquino, Garganta, Manechini, Bedo, & Puggina, 2017). Moreover, for possession to be effective, it must happen closer to your opponent's goal; otherwise, an increase in possession is totally ineffective (Casal, Maneiro, Ardá, Marí, & Losada, 2017).…”

“…This statement could be supported by the changes of key pass and through balls as these two match performance indicators can describe the key situations during match play. The evolving technical characteristics of the increase of passing frequency may possibly be driven by the prevalence of possession play (Aquino et al, 2017a;Yi et al, 2019b), whereas how to decrease unwanted passes and improve offensive efficiency are key issues for teams that employ this tactical approach to consider during the coaching process (Alves et al, 2019). These evolving trends are further supported by the changes in the number of crosses and long balls.…”

“…Probably with the intention of avoiding a comeback or once ahead on the scoreboard. The ball possession indicator is important depending on the league, although it is associated with success in the Bundesliga [32], Spanish League [6] and Premier League [33], or in international tournaments such as the World Cup [34]. Furthermore, it seems that football is evolving towards the possession game, due to an increase in the number and efficiency in passing [35], mainly in players on their defensive line [36].…”
