Effects of L-carnitine supplementation on nutritional, immunological, and cardiac parameters in hemodialysis patients: a pilot study

Abstract: Background: L-carnitine is an essential compound that facilitates the transport of long-chain fatty acid across the inner mitochondrial membrane for β-oxidation. However, the effect of L-carnitine supplementation remains to be fully explored in patients with chronic kidney disease. We aimed in this study to determine the multidirectional effects of L-carnitine supplementation on clinical parameters in more detail. Methods: We orally administered L-carnitine to maintain serum-free carnitine levels within the no… Show more

“…In addition, carnitine supplementation also affects other nutritional factors. Previous studies reported that L ‐carnitine supplementation improved the plasma lipid profile, cardiac function, anemia, and responses to erythropoietin [9,10,13–16]. In the present study, the following results were obtained.…”

“…Hence, the ratio of acyl to free carnitine is increased in hemodialysis patients as compared to healthy controls. It has been shown in several reports [9][10][11][12], as well as in our study, that although total, free, and acyl carnitine change simultaneously, the ratio of acyl to free carnitine does not decrease at all or decreases only slightly in hemodialysis patients. The main reason for carnitine deficiency in dialysis patients is free carnitine disposal during hemodialysis.…”

“…The results of this study showed that carnitine injection along with endurance training could reduce the myocardial tissue damage caused by boldenone. Previous studies have demonstrated the protective effects on the heart due to supplementation with L-carnitine (39)(40)(41)(42). In this regard, Sada et al (2015) showed that L-carnitine supplementation significantly increased left ventricular function (42).…”

In this regard, Sada et al (2015) showed that L-carnitine supplementation significantly increased left ventricular function (42). Koeth et al found a significant association between plasma L-carnitine levels and risk of coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and heart risk factors in heart disease (43).…”

“…The canonical function of L-carnitine is to regulate the transportation of medium-chain and long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane for β-oxidation (Sada, Kato, Sumimoto, Ohmori, & Ohdan, 2015). Recent studies have shown that L-carnitine also participates in the regulation of reproduction.…”
