Many people continue suffering from myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) defined as a regional pain syndrome characterized by muscle pain caused by myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) clinically. Muscle spasm and block of blood circulation can be noticed in the taut bands. In the MTrP region, nociceptors can be sensitized by the peripheral inflammatory factors and contracture of fascia can also be induced. Traditional treatments of MPS include stretching therapy, thermal treatment, electrical stimulation, massage, manipulation, trigger points injection, acupuncture, and medicine. However, the pain syndrome may not be relieved even under multiple therapies. Recently, the Kinesio Taping (KT) method is popularly used in sports injuries, postoperative complications, and various pain problems, but little research is focused on MPS with KT method. In this paper, we review the research studies on the application to KT in treating MPS and other related issues. It appears that the KT application can elevate the subcutaneous space and then increase the blood circulation and lymph fluid drainage to reduce the chemical factors around the MTrP region. Therefore, it is suggested that KT method can be used as a regular treatment or added to the previous treatment for myofascial pain.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common medical condition with major socioeconomic impact. Prevalence in adult population is estimated to be 5-30%. Its pathology is based on venous hypertension on the lower extremities. This results in edema, subcutaneous fibrosis, pigmentation, chronic pain and ulceration. The severity of chronic venous disease is closely related to the magnitude of venous hypertension. Treatment options for CVI include medical, interventional, surgical and physical treatments. The initial management of CVI involves conservative approaches to reduce symptoms and prevent development of secondary complications and progression of disease. It includes the elevation of the limb together with the supportive methods, pharmacotherapy and structured exercise program, as well as complex decongestive physiotherapy (CDP), intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC), compression stocking (CS), patient education and kinesio tape. CVI is a chronic disease that needs a lifelong care. In this review, we present a discussion about pathophysiology and risk factors for CVI development and conservative treatment options.

The Contribution of Kinesiotape Application Combined with Calf Exercises to Conservative Treatment Efficacy in Chronic Venous Insufficiency

Objective: Exercise is recommended to increase venous refilling time and for restoring the calf muscle pump in chronic venous insufficiency. Several researchers reported positive results on efficacy of kinesiotape application in chronic venous insufficiency. The present study is designed to investigate the efficacy of kinesiotape application when combined to a calf exercise program in patients with chronic venous insufficiency. Material and Methods: A total of 51 patients were included in the study. Participants were randomly divided into three groups. Visual analog pain scale and visual analog general health scale eval--uations, and ankle joint range of motion and isokinetic muscle strength measurements were performed before the treatment. Interventions regarding the groups were as follows: Group 1; the exercise program alone, Group 2; kinesiotape application combined with the exercise program, Group 3; the exercise program with pseudo kinesiotape application. The measurements were repeated four weeks following the interventions. Results: There were no statistically significant differences between the demographic data of the patients (p>0.05). In all three groups, the visual analog pain scale scores decreased and the vi--sual analog general health scale scores increased (p˂0.05). The decreasing visual analog pain scale scores in groups 2 and 3 were statistically higher than that of group 1 (p˂0.05). There was no change in the range of motion of the ankle joints after treatment (p˃0.05). Isokinetic plantar muscle strength was increased significantly in all three groups (p˂0.05). However, muscle strength and total work values of Group 2 patients were significantly higher than the other two groups (p˂0.05). Conclusion: Calf exercises are effective in decreasing the symptoms of chronic venous insuffici--ency. This effect can be augmented by kineosiotape application.
