Effects of Icariin on Atherosclerosis and Predicted Function Regulatory Network in ApoE Deficient Mice

Abstract: Objective. Icariin plays a pivotal role in ameliorating atherosclerosis for animal models although its comprehensive biological role remains largely unexplored. This study aimed to fully understand the effects of icariin on atherosclerosis in high-fat diet-induced ApoE−/− mice and investigate mRNA-miRNA regulation based on microarray and bioinformatics analysis. Methods. The areas of atherosclerotic lesions in en face aorta were evaluated. Microarray analysis was performed on atherosclerotic aortic tissues. Th… Show more

“…inversely correlated expression levels) would integrate a restricted list of preferential putative targets (Table 4 shows different algorithms for integrative analysis). By using a similar approach, Zhang et al have recently constructed a miRNA:mRNA regulatory network for ATH progression in icariin‐treated, high‐fat fed ApoE‐deficient mice which showed that changes in miRNA expression mainly affected the PI3K/Akt, Ras, ErbB and VEGF signalling pathways in lesions [243].…”

“…Epimedium is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to nourish the kidney and strengthen the bones (Kim et al, 2018). Many studies have shown that ICA could promote the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, and regulate the differentiation of mesenchymal cells into osteoblasts (Li et al, 2018;Zhang et al, 2018;Zhu et al, 2018;Xu et al, 2019a). In our experiments, drug carrying was achieved by co-incubating ICA with exosomes, and the successful incorporation of ICA was detected by NTA and TEM.…”

“…Data from this study suggest that treatment with AC attenuated the altered levels of oxidative stress parameters in the aortic tissue of atherosclerotic rats. Deregulation of eNOS/NO pathway enhanced atherogenesis and inflammation in the aortic tissue, but AC treatment attenuated the altered eNOS/NO signaling pathway in the aortic tissue of atherosclerotic rats [15]. Moreover, the protein expressions of NF-κB and MAPK were attenuated in the aortic tissue of AC-treated group, relative to the atherosclerosis group of rats.…”
