Effects of Gastrodiae rhizoma on proliferation and differentiation of human embryonic neural stem cells

Abstract: In conclusion, our study demonstrates for the first time that EEGR induced proliferation and neuronal differentiation of NSCs, suggesting its potential benefits on NSC-based therapies and neuroregeneration in various neurodegenerative diseases and brain injuries.

“…Regarding NSC differentiation, the expressions of specific neural markers including nestin, neuron‐specific class III beta‐tubulin (TuJ1) and MAP‐2 were assessed using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunocytochemistry, resulting in a high expression of TuJ1 and MAP‐2, whereas a decreased expression of nestin was observed. The differential gene expression suggests that EEGR induces NSC differentiation, as nestin is considered an early differentiation marker specific to NSCs, contrary to TuJ1 and MAP‐2 that are specific to neurons 53 . It would be interesting if electrophysiology techniques were to be included in these studies in order to evaluate cell functionality, neuron–glia communication and synaptic transmission.…”

“…Gastrodiae rhizome [ 27 ], Astragalus mongholicus [ 28 ], Angelica [ 29 ], and other herbs are well-known, and many researchers have studied their effects on the proliferation and differentiation of NSCs. In conclusion, Chinese herbal medicine has shown great potential in inducing the proliferation and differentiation of NSCs.…”
