Effects of Electronic Stability Control: An Update

Abstract: The present study confirms the results of the earlier study. There are significant reductions in single-vehicle crash rates when passenger vehicles are equipped with ESC. In addition, ESC leads to reductions in severe multiple-vehicle crashes.

“…Spatial separation, achieved for example by building divided highways, or using the relatively inexpensive wire rope fence, offers great potential to reduce the number of deaths caused by crossing over the midline ( Figure 5). Electronic stability program (ESP) systems may, however, also contribute to reducing these crashes (Farmer, 2006;Lie et al, 2004). The reduction of speed limits in winter, as has been practiced in Finland for decades, may be another effective measure.…”

“…A discussion of these analyses and a comparison with the main conclusions of the NHTSA 2012 analysis is included in a companion paper (Wenzel, submitted). In addition, several have evaluated the effectiveness that new technologies ESC (Farmer 2006;Sivinski 2011), side airbags (Kahane 2007;McCartt and Kyrychenko 2007), and compatibility measures (Baker et al 2008;Ossiander et al 2013) have in reducing fatality risk. However, none of these studies have evaluated whether widespread introduction of these technologies are expected to change the current relationship between vehicle mass and fatality risk per vehiclemile traveled (VMT).…”
