An intelligent agents based platform is presented which offers an instantaneous, automatic decision-making capability, enabling the execution of complex system level power management and mission planning/re-planning tasks on board a UAV. The agents platform is integrated with a 100 kW, aircraft power systems experimental test facility to demonstrate the response of the entire system to vignette-based mission events which are triggered both by the test hardware, such as electrical drive faults, and emulated events, such as a fuel shortage.

The more-electric aircraft concept has made the extraction of electrical power from both high-pressure shaft and low-pressure shaft of the aircraft engine essential for future aircraft. With each shaft driving one electrical generation channel, an advanced dual-channel enhanced power generation system can be formed. This paper aims to address the power quality issues of this dual-channel power generation system, specifically focuses on the reduction of harmonics on a common dc bus. A simplified model to estimate second carrier harmonic of dc current in two-level converters is developed and reveals the fact that while this second carrier harmonic component magnitude can be determined by modulation index and dc-link current, its phase angle is solely dependent on the angle of carrier signals. Based on the developed model and these key findings, a new harmonic cancellation method is proposed through active power sharing and phase angle shifting of the carrier signals within different power sources. The method has demonstrated high robustness and is effective under different fundamental frequencies and power sharing ratio. Both simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper to validate the proposed harmonic model and the enhanced cancellation method.

This paper presents a new electricity power generation architecture for the engine system of more electric aircraft (MEA). A starter/generator (SG) is connected to highpressure (HP) spool, and a generator is attached to low-pressure (LP) spool. Their outputs supply a common DC bus. A back-toback (B2B) converter is connected between the AC sides of two generators. There are two main contributions of the proposed idea. First, some power can be transferred from LP shaft to HP shaft via the B2B converter, which will benefit to reduce the fuel consumption and increase compressor surge margin of the engine. Second, the HP starter/generator could operate in a high speed without flux weakening, hence the magnitude of stator current will largely decrease when output same active power, leading to the reduction of overall power losses. Modeling and control method design are illustrated. The effectiveness of proposed power generation architecture, engine performance improvement and power loss reduction are verified.
