“…The possible similarity between cerebral impulses in epilepsy and ectopic activity in myocardial infarction was noted by Harris & Kokernot (1950) who were able to demonstrate an antiarrhythmic effect of the antiepileptic agent, phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin). Subsequently, phenytoin has been proved to be effective in correcting various experimental and clinical arrhythmias (see review by Dreifus & Watanabe, 1970) and has gained wide clinical use.…”

“…From Withering's administration of a decoction of foxglove to his patients [8] through clinical use of quinidine, procaine and diphenylhydantoin in the first half of the twentieth century [9,10] antiarrhythmic drug therapy was largely empirical. Singh and Vaughan Williams made the first widely accepted attempt to develop antiarrhythmic strategies based on an understanding of mechanism [11], defining drug actions largely via their electrophysiologic effects on isolated tissues.…”

“…This information is of some importance since it is known that 61% of electrical deaths arising from myocardial infarction among patients younger than 65 occur within one hour of onset (Gordon & Kannel, 1971 (Schone & Lindner, 1962). This effectively reduces cardiac sympathetic drive which has been implicated in the genesis of early arrhythmias induced either by coronary ligation (Harris, Estandia & Tillotson, 1951;Harris & Bisteni, 1955;Shanks & Dunlop, 1967) or by infusion of cardiac glycosides (Dohadwalla et al, 1969). Secondly, prenylamine causes direct effects on various phases of the cardiac action potential.…”
