Effects of competitive standard, team formation and playing position on match running performance of Brazilian professional soccer players

Abstract: This study examined the effects of competitive standard, team formation and playing position on match running performance in a Brazilian professional soccer team. Performance was investigated in 36 players in 48 matches at three competitive standards: 1 st São Paulo State Championship; 3 rd and 4 th Brazilian leagues. Global Positioning System technology was used to determine total distance covered (TD), maximal running speed (MRS), mean speed (SMEAN) and frequency of high-intensity activities (HIA). Data were… Show more

“…Another limitation of the study is that the effect of different variables such as team formation, competitive standard, or style of play on the acceleration and sprint profiles was not analysed. Future studies may consider these variables since these variables may affect match running performance [ 42 44 ]. For example, a previous study showed that teams which were characterised by possession-play covered greater distance in high-intensity running actions [ 44 ].…”

“…It is difficult to fully explain the discrepancies between studies, but most likely they are linked to the elite/sub-elite team composition of the lower divisions compared to the full-team elite standard in upper divisions [ 33 ]. Also, additional factors related to the complexity of soccer match play could contribute and impact load parameters, such as physical capacity [ 34 ], technical level [ 35 ], playing formation [ 36 , 37 ], and environment [ 38 ]. Furthermore, each competition may present its own idiosyncrasies, suggesting that data generalization should be done with caution.…”

“…The analysis of playing position on running and skill-related performance has received extensive coverage (9,16,39). In Brazilian soccer however, a few studies have addressed this topic but only for match running performance (3,5,31). To the best knowledge of the present authors, the current study is the first to provide a detailed investigation of running and network analysis of professional soccer players in all playing positions.…”

“…For example, when a team is winning, it possible that its players adopt a ball retention strategy, slowing down the match resulting in lower physical demands (6,30). Additional key contextual factors identified include team formation (8,10), and playing position (3,5,9). However, these factors have not been simultaneously analyzed in the same study.…”
