Effects of Collagen Peptide Ingestion on UV-B-Induced Skin Damage

Abstract: The effect of daily ingestion of collagen peptide on the skin damage induced by repeated UV-B irradiation was examined. Ingestion of collagen peptide (0.2 g/kg/d) suppressed UV-B-induced decreases in skin hydration, hyperplasia of the epidermis, and decreases in soluble type I collagen. These results suggest that collagen peptide is beneficial as a dietary supplement to suppress UV-B-induced skin damage and photoaging.

“…CP ingestion also improves the mechanical properties of the Achilles tendon (Minaguchi et al, 2005) and the skin (Matsuda et al, 2006). Skin damage induced by repeated UVB irradiation in mice is suppressed by CP ingestion (Tanaka et al, 2009). Brittle nails are improved (Rosenburg et al, 1957), and hair diameter increases following the ingestion of gelatin (Scala et al, 1976).…”

“…For example, the effects of the oral intake of various compounds in defense against skin damage caused by UV have been examined. Oral administration of collagen peptide was reported to induce an increase in fibroblast density and to enhance the formation of dermal collagen fibrils in piglet skin (4), as well as to suppress the UVB-induced decreases in skin hydration, epidermal hypertrophy, and amount of soluble type I collagen in mouse skin (5). Oral intake of soy isoflavones was shown to suppress UVB-induced matrix metalloproteinase expression and the subsequent collagen degradation in mouse skin (6).…”
