“…For example, some of the early laboratory studies of insect muscle physiology revealed that the membrane of these cells is highly permeable to Mn 2+ and other divalent metal cations, possibly via the action of Ca 2+ channels ( Fukuda and Kawa, 1977 ). Specifically, several studies demonstrated that increased levels of Mn 2+ in the extracellular bath significantly reduced the excitability and contractility of visceral muscles in diverse insect species ( Deitmer, 1977 ; Cook and Mark Holman, 1979 ).
