“…These and other experiments on the respiration both of the whole animal and of its tissues indicated that in the frog thyroxine mimics the metabolic effects of cold acclimation. More recently, Depaoli, Segura & Lascano (1973) have found differences in the effects of temperature acclimation on the oxygen consumption of the whole brain, measured with the Warburg technique, in two ecologically different anuran species, the mainly terrestrial Bufo arenarum and the aquatic Leptodactylus ocellatus. Depaoli et al used an acclimation period of 7 days only, and the temperatures used were 2-4", 2 0 -2 5 O or 37 "C. I n L. ocellatus kept at 2-4 "C the oxygen consumption was lower than in those kept at the two higher temperatures, while in B. arenarum the effects, though similar, were very small.…”
