Effects of a telescopic intramedullary rod for treating patients with osteogenesis imperfecta of the femur

Abstract: PurposeTo introduce a new model of telescopic intramedullary rod (TIR), evaluate its effects on treating patients presenting with moderate and severe osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and to compare the findings with those of other telescopic rods.MethodsA total of 21 patients (nine girls and 12 boys; mean age at first operation, 6.6 years, 1.52 to 13.18) who underwent 52 femoral operations were monitored during a mean of 9.96 years (3.39 to 14.54). Patient characteristics, telescoping rod capability and its compli… Show more

“…Although elongating rods have the benefit of expanding as the bone grows, non-elongating rods are still preferred when treating either the too young, whose bones are too small to support telescopic rods, or those nearing skeletal maturity whose bones are no longer expected to grow [11]. Several single proximal-entry telescopic nails have been developed after the Bailey-Dubow and Sheffield rod, such as the Santa Casa telescopic intramedullary rod, Dyna-Locking Telescopic Rod, and the Fassier-Duval (FD) nail [7,12]. FD nails have widespread acceptance in several pediatric orthopedic centers around the world.…”

“…Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a systemic bone disease that is accompanied by bone fragility that results in fractures and deformities [ 1 ] [ 2 ]. In 1987, J.P. Metaizeau proposed the use of counter directed intramedullary transphyseal elastic nailing to prevent deformities and treat fractures of the tubular bones.…”

“…In 1987, J.P. Metaizeau proposed the use of counter directed intramedullary transphyseal elastic nailing to prevent deformities and treat fractures of the tubular bones. Currently, the use of transphyseal intramedullary nailing is a method of choice for prevention and treatment of complications in OI children [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ]. The advantage of elastic rods is the possibility to use them in a small bone canal, which is characteristic for OI children [ 3 ] [ 7 ].…”
