Abstract: To assess the effect of vitamin D supplementation on parameters of insulin sensitivity/resistance (IS/IR) and insulin secretion in subjects with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). A prospective double-blind randomized control trial was conducted to assess the effect of vitamin D on insulin kinetics in women with PCOS. The trial was conducted in a tertiary care research hospital. A total of 36 subjects with PCOS, aged 18–35 years, were included in this study. Vitamin D3 4000 IU/day versus placebo was given onc… Show more

“…These indicate that low Vitamin D levels are associated with insulin resistance in women with PCOS [12]. Our data suggest a relationship of Vitamin D and BMI in PCOS women, which is in agreement with many studies [8,13,14]. Other studies suggest that low Vitamin D levels are related to impaired glucose clearance, insulin secretion, and insulin resistance [15,16].…”

“…The 25(OH)D 2 concentrations measured in PCOS and MetS were indicative of vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/mL), as defined by the Institute of Medicine (47) and seen in other studies of PCOS (21, 48, 49). Vitamin D deficiency has also been associated with metabolic disturbances such as obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia (50, 51).…”

“…We extended these past trial findings, as our study used a unique combination of monthly high‐dose vitamin D dosing for 1 year in a population‐based sample and assessed novel parameters not measured in previous trials (eg, excess pressure integral and backward pressure amplitude). For instance, only a few prior RCTs used monthly ≥100‐kIU dosing (as our study did) but for not more than 6 months …”
